At a glance
A home chargepoint quote depends on parking access, cable routing, the consumer unit and earthing arrangement, available electrical capacity, vehicle compatibility and smart-charging preferences.
What to have ready
- Off-street parking and your preferred charger position
- Vehicle model, connector type and maximum AC charge rate
- Consumer-unit and electricity-meter photographs
- Approximate cable route and any walls or paving involved
- Wi-Fi or mobile signal at the proposed charger location
Start with parking and cable safety
A typical home installation needs off-street parking so the charging cable does not cross a public pavement. Position the unit where it can reach the vehicle inlet without creating a trip hazard or placing strain on the connector.
The electrical survey matters
The installer should check the consumer unit, earthing arrangement, main fuse, available supply capacity and cable route. Some installations use load management to prevent the charger and household appliances exceeding the available supply.
Charging speed is a system limit
The charger rating is only one part of the equation. The vehicle’s onboard AC charger, the property supply and any load-management settings can all limit the actual rate. A higher-rated unit will not make every car charge faster.
Plan smart charging around your routine
Smart charging can schedule charging for lower-cost periods, but the charger needs reliable connectivity and compatible controls. Compare tariff windows, regular mileage and the time the car is usually parked at home.
