The three main boiler types
A combi boiler provides heating and hot water on demand without a separate cylinder. It can suit homes where space is limited, but the available flow rate may be a constraint when several outlets are used together.
A system boiler works with a hot-water cylinder and can better support higher simultaneous demand. A heat-only boiler also uses a cylinder and is often found with a separate cold-water storage tank.
Why sizing matters
Boiler output should reflect the property’s heat loss and hot-water requirements, not simply match the number printed on the old appliance. Oversizing can lead to unnecessary cycling, while undersizing may leave the home uncomfortable.
An installer should consider insulation, room sizes, radiator output, water pressure and the number of bathrooms before recommending a model.
What can affect the installation
Keeping the same boiler type and location is often more straightforward than relocating it or changing the system layout. Flue access, condensate drainage, gas pipe sizing and the condition of the heating water can all affect the work required.
- Ask what is included in system cleaning and protection.
- Confirm controls, warranty conditions and handover documents.
- Gas and LPG work must be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Think beyond the immediate replacement
If you expect to add bathrooms, improve insulation or move to low-carbon heating, mention this during the survey. A decision that solves today’s problem should not make a planned upgrade unnecessarily difficult later.
